Paths

The Calamitous Bob

Paths are the Interface’s framework for converting a person’s convictions into a formal developmental commitment. They do more than label an occupation: a chosen path empowers body and mind, accelerates the acquisition of associated skills, and increases their potency. Because only one path may be held until the current one evolves, the system makes growth cumulative but not limitless, binding advancement to a declared conceptual direction.

Definition and Availability

The path interface becomes available after Viviane Saint-Lys has operated in the world long enough to become fully integrated into Nyil. The system presents paths as commitments to concepts rather than ordinary jobs, although Viviane initially tests that comparison by asking whether a path is “like a job.” The explanation emphasizes that the choice is consequential: paths can evolve into more specialized concepts, and several paths may eventually combine into one, but the immediate structure permits only a single path.

The system presents the choice as morally open rather than mechanically deceptive. It states that there is no wrong choice as long as the chooser follows personal convictions, placing interpretation and self-definition alongside numerical advancement. Yet the later restrictions show that this freedom is not unlimited. A path determines which associated skills become easier to learn and more powerful, so the system rewards commitment while narrowing the field of possible development.

Viviane Saint-Lys’s First Commitment

Viviane Saint-Lys approaches the selection with a mixture of irritation and practicality. Most available choices concern lightly armed combat or desk work. The only other exotic option she notices is Alchemist, but she has not encountered a single herb during the preceding week, making that route immediately impractical. The choice is therefore shaped both by abstract affinity and by the harsh material conditions of her survival.

She follows the instruction to select Black Hedge Witch. The Interface confirms the choice, and Viviane Saint-Lys responds by asking when she will receive the expected cat and hat, treating the newly acquired identity with irreverent skepticism rather than solemn acceptance. The path nevertheless produces a measurable effect: her mental statistics become 1.2 times more efficient, on average, when she casts black-aligned spells, and the acquisition of relevant skills improves.

That first commitment gives form to abilities that had previously been developing in less organized ways. After a monster is slain almost instantly, the system reports that mana manipulation has reached intermediate 1, raises Acuity by one point, and identifies her mana channels as nascent. The path thus operates as a bridge between choice and feedback: a conceptual decision is translated into concrete alterations in combat capacity and magical development.

Evolution into Black Witch

The path remains active as Viviane Saint-Lys continues to use black mana, but it does not remain static. When path evolutions become available, she selects Black Witch. The evolved path sharply intensifies the original alignment. Mental statistics are now three times more efficient when she wields black mana, while other types receive only a fifty-percent efficiency increase. Skill acquisition associated with the path becomes vastly improved.

The specialization also imposes a decisive prohibition: Viviane Saint-Lys may no longer manipulate life mana. Evolution therefore brings both power and exclusion. Black Witch is not simply a stronger version of Black Hedge Witch; it is a more severe conceptual identity, increasing efficiency within black mana while closing an entire magical domain. The system’s promise that there is no wrong choice is consequently best understood as permission to follow conviction, not a guarantee that every choice preserves every future possibility.

The evolution occurs alongside a dangerous physical experience. During the use of True Mass Yoink, a network of black spears cuts through the surrounding mass, burrows for mana, takes it, spreads, tracks, and withdraws at the limit of its reach. The Interface records Mana manipulation: Intermediate 1 and Black Hedge Witch at ten before announcing the new selection of Black Witch. As the mana returns, Viviane Saint-Lys experiences intense pain, black flames emerge from her skin where her conduits have become saturated, and a warning reports mild mana poisoning. She ignores both the warning and the Interface messages, relying instead on direct bodily sensation.

Rules, Feedback, and Risk

Paths belong to a larger progression structure in which the Interface repeatedly assesses and reorganizes Viviane Saint-Lys’s capabilities. An earlier update announces that her stats have been assessed and that adjustments will occur; later, the system announces that her skills have been assessed, identifies some as alien because they do not match the world’s magic, and decouples some of them from those alien skills. These assessments establish the administrative logic surrounding paths: growth is not merely experienced but categorized, separated, and revised by an external rule system.

The path system also gives numerical shape to experiences that Viviane Saint-Lys understands emotionally and physically. Mana manipulation receives an explicit level, Acuity receives a discrete increase, and efficiency is expressed through multipliers. At the same time, the system’s categories cannot fully replace sensation. When black mana saturates her conduits, Viviane Saint-Lys dismisses the messages as visual aids for people who cannot feel what she feels. The contrast makes the path both empowering and hazardous: its bonuses are legible as statistics, but its costs arrive as pain, saturation, and mana poisoning.

Conceptual and Narrative Significance

Paths make identity an active mechanism rather than a fixed description. Viviane Saint-Lys does not merely discover that she resembles a witch; she selects Black Hedge Witch, receives advantages that reinforce the choice, and later commits to Black Witch with stronger alignment and harsher limits. The sequence resembles a progression from provisional role to specialized self-definition, but the system keeps that transformation visibly transactional. Every gain is attached to a rule, and every specialization carries a loss.

The language of conviction is especially important because the mechanics repeatedly test it. Black mana becomes more than a color of spellcasting: it is associated with concepts that allow spells to become more specialized. When the returning mana aligns with Viviane Saint-Lys’s emotions, particularly her deep resentment, she finally understands what Solfis had meant by charging mana with concepts. The path therefore links system design, magical technique, and psychology. It rewards not an abstract class choice alone, but the convergence between the chosen concept and the emotions driving its wielder.

In narrative terms, Paths provide the book’s progression engine while preserving uncertainty about what commitment will cost. The Interface offers lists, multipliers, skill notices, and evolution prompts, giving advancement the clean appearance of a game system. Viviane Saint-Lys’s hunger, pain, improvisation, resentment, and practical constraints keep that apparent clarity unstable. Paths promise direction, but the direction becomes a narrowing corridor: the more powerfully Viviane Saint-Lys enters black-aligned magic, the less available the alternatives become.
